Snapchat is considered a social media platform because it does meet all the criteria for a social media app. You can exchange messages with people, and share pictures and videos with them. 

The main difference between Snapchat and other social media apps is the fact that the snaps, or messages, exchanged are automatically deleted after they are viewed. It's also possible to determine how long the messages will be visible after they are sent, or if the users want to save the messages.
